Businessman Loses US$184,900 and Firearm in Mysterious Ruwa Break-In

A local businessman has reported the theft of US$184,900 and a loaded firearm from his girlfriend’s home in Springvale, Ruwa.

According to police, Joseph Maruta, 40, had collected US$181,000 from a potato seed deal in Kwekwe and brought the cash, along with his pistol, to his girlfriend Leoba Hunda’s house.

An alarm sounded at 2 AM, which Hunda dismissed as a neighbor’s false alarm.

However, by morning, the bag containing the money and gun had vanished. The rear car windscreen was damaged, suggesting forced entry.

Harare police spokesperson Inspector Luckmore Chakanza confirmed an unlawful entry and theft case is being investigated. Authorities are probing whether this was an inside job or targeted robbery.

The incident raises concerns about illegal firearms in circulation and potential links to organized crime. Police are appealing for tips from anyone with information about the incident.
