Springboks loosehead prop and Zimbabwean born Tendai Mtawarira’s career has been an excel for 12 years.
Mtawarira started his journey with the Springboks in June 2008 where he was handed his debut against Wales.
A reflection of his career up to his retirement came when he was given the chance to scrum in his first test of the British and Irish Lions back in 2009 overshadowing his opponent Phil Vickery leading to the latter’s substitution in 45th minute of the test.
Mtawarira got an accolade of a man of the match award in that game but due to inexperience, he committed many fouls.
He was ornamented with three major International silverwares as he won his major tournament this year after South Africa defeated England 32-12 at this years’ World Cup rugby tournament held in Japan.
Mtawarira holds a record of the third-highest springboks capped player of all generations having played 117 games.
June 16 2018, the former church hill boy played his 100th senior team match against the 2019 world cup losing finalists and springboks opponents, England.
Whenever wearing his springbok jersey Mtawarira’s forceful, powerful and tough character lead to his nickname the “Beast” given to him by South African rugby fans.
However, the Beast once faced a grey patch especially in 2018 when he dropped to the bench and also acquired a neck injury that fluctuated to his absence of the 2018 Springbok’s European tour.
Apart from the springboks, Tendai Mtawarira also pursues his career with the Sharks a Durban based rugby team and has won himself silverwares with the club.
Mtawarira “The Beast” as he is affectionately known retired from international rugby wrapping a successful career by clinching world cup title over the weekend.
In his retirement statement, Mtawarira thanked everyone who has made his rugby career a great success.
“Thank you, South Africa, for adopting me as a son. And to all my amazing fans throughout the world that chanted Beeeeeast every time l did something spectacular on the field thank you l will certainly miss that”, he said.
