Former Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) commander, Lieutenant-General (Retired) Anselem Nhamo Sanyatwe, has described his appointment as the new Minister of Sports, Recreation, Arts, and Culture by President Emmerson Mnangagwa as a “great honor” and a “special recognition.”
Sanyatwe was sworn in by President Mnangagwa at State House in Harare on Thursday, March 27, in a ceremony attended by Vice Presidents Constantino Chiwenga and Kembo Mohadi, as well as other senior government officials.
After taking the oath of office, Sanyatwe expressed his appreciation and humility, acknowledging the trust and confidence placed in him by the President. He stated:
“I would like to first thank His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe and Commander-in-Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, for appointing me as Minister of Sports, Recreation, Arts, and Culture. This is indeed a great honor, a special recognition from His Excellency, and I am humbled by the confidence and trust the President has given me to lead this important ministry.”
Sanyatwe, who succeeded Kirsty Coventry—now the 10th President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC)—stressed the importance of arts and culture as powerful tools for fostering national unity, empowering the youth, and contributing to economic development. He said:
“Through arts and culture, a nation defines its identity, history, and aspirations. These are vital elements for us as a people.”
With this in mind, Sanyatwe emphasized the need to collaborate with all stakeholders as he begins his new role. He outlined his mission to develop, promote, and enhance Zimbabwe’s cultural identity, striving for both local and international recognition.
“I am committed to working together as a team, moving forward with a united purpose as I take on this new responsibility,” Sanyatwe added.
Sanyatwe assumes this role at a time when Zimbabwe’s senior national football team, the Warriors, is forced to play international matches in other countries due to the lack of FIFA-certified stadiums in Zimbabwe.
