Sir Wicknell Among Africa’s Leading Philanthropists: $60 Million Donated in 2024 Alone

Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivhayo has been named among Africa’s top philanthropists, joining continental giants like Tony Elumelu and Aliko Dangote in shaping the future of the continent through large-scale giving.

In the latest Fortune Afrika report titled “Giants of Generosity: Africa’s Top Philanthropists Shaping the Continent’s Future,” Chivhayo was spotlighted for his record-breaking philanthropic efforts. The controversial yet influential entrepreneur is said to have donated at least US$60 million in cash and assets in 2024 alone, making him one of the biggest individual donors in Southern Africa.

Millions in Cars, Cash, and Social Impact

According to the report, Chivhayo’s donations were not channelled through a formal foundation but given directly to a broad spectrum of recipients. These include musicians, footballers, churches, content creators, and vulnerable individuals across Zimbabwe.More than 150 vehicles, including luxury cars, were handed out to beneficiaries throughout the year.

While his giving style has often attracted both praise and criticism—accused by some of flaunting wealth for popularity—Chivhayo’s impact on recipients and the national discourse around wealth redistribution is undeniable.

A New Model of Giving?

Unlike structured foundations such as the Tony Elumelu Foundation, which is investing US$100 million to support 10,000 African entrepreneurs over a decade, or the Aliko Dangote Foundation, focused on health and education across the continent, Chivhayo’s giving is spontaneous and personal.

However, others contend it reflects a homegrown approach to philanthropy rooted in African traditions of communal support and Ubuntu.

“Wicknell represents a rising class of African philanthropists who operate outside Western models, focusing instead on direct impact,” said Fortune Afrika.

Continental Recognition

Chivhayo’s inclusion on the list marks a rare moment of positive international recognition for a Zimbabwean businessman, in a country often plagued by economic hardships and political controversy. His profile sits alongside Nigerian billionaires Tony Elumelu and Aliko Dangote, two of Africa’s most respected economic leaders.

Whether through cars, cash, or influence, Wicknell Chivhayo has cemented his place as one of Africa’s most talked-about and impactful philanthropists of the decade.
