Jailed Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) activists, including interim leader Jameson Timba, have been denied bail by the High Court.
The activists had initially been denied bail at the Harare Magistrates’ Court and subsequently appealed the decision.
However, in a ruling delivered on Wednesday, High Court Judge Munamato Mutevedzi upheld the lower court’s decision, stating that there was no misdirection in its assessment of the case.
“In the end, all having been said and done, my conclusion is that there was no misdirection in the court’s overall assessment of the issues and its finding that the appellants were not proper candidates for admission to bail,” Mutevedzi ruled.
The judge added that while he might have reached a different decision, he was bound by the lower court’s ruling.
The only exception was Maxwell Sande, who was granted bail due to his age.
The activists, accused of holding an unsanctioned gathering and disorderly conduct, have been in custody since June 16. Initially numbering 80, only three underage activists have been released.
