An overzealous Ruwa police officer bashed a suspect in police custody, who later succumbed to the injuries.
The offender, aged 39 and stationed at ZRP Ruwa, appeared before a Harare Magistrates’ Court facing murder charges.
The NPA said the tragic incident occurred on 27 May 2025 after the victim was arrested in connection with a case of assault.
“While in custody, it is alleged that the accused assaulted the suspect with a hoe handle before detaining him in the cells.
“Later that evening, the suspect’s condition reportedly deteriorated.
“He was taken to the Rehabilitation Clinic, where he died the following morning,” said NPA.
He was arrested on 10 June and appeared in court on 11 June 2025 for initial remand.
“Investigations are still ongoing. The accused was granted USD 400 bail, and the matter was remanded to 2 July 2025.”
