Former Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) boss and legislator Philip Chiyangwa is facing embezzlement charges; charges which come barely a month after he got his successor, Felton Kamambo, arrested for allegedly threatening him.
Although Chiyangwa’s case against Kamambo seemed like a case of bitterness, his charges seems more serious. His seeming child play charade against Kamambo could be catching up with him. Local daily Newsday has published fresh details on the Chiyangwa ZIFA embezzlement case. According to the publication the former ZIFA boss used ZIFA’s money to travel with his friends and take trips that were not football related using money from ZIFA coffers.
Official documents show that Zifa, on May 13, 2017, bought air tickets for Chiyangwa’s friend Chamu Chiwanza and his employee Marshal Jonga for US$3 954 to travel to a Confederation of African Football (Caf) congress in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The two went on to misrepresent themselves as Zifa officials at the meeting.
Payment voucher shows that Zifa paid US$13 986 for air tickets for Chiyangwa for a trip to London, money that the association is trying to reclaim.
Chiyangwa has refuted all these claims saying he poured millions on ZIFA to keep the body running during his tenure as president.
Chiyangwa took Kamambo to the courts over a text message which advised him not to interfere with football issues. It is understood that Chiyangwa has been meddling in football issues regardless of him vacating the ZIFA highest office. This got to Kamambo who sought to come to a common ground with Chiyangwa but alas Chiyangwa reacted by getting Kamambo to the courts.
This case of embezzlement could just be the hand of Karma. Maybe indeed what goes around does come around.
Is karma catching up with Chiyangwa?
