Masvingo – Luckson Mavasa who was convicted for stock theft had his 3 year sentence increased by 12 months after he escaped from prison.

Mavasa appeared before the Magistrate Mbonisi Ndlovu and 12 months were added effectively to his 36 months sentence.

The accused (25) resides at village 9, Merivale, Resettlement Chibhakera, Chief Chitanga, Mwenezi and is unemployed.

Mavasa on the 17th of June 2020 escaped from custody at Masvingo Remand Prison. At around 0400 hours he was released by Correctional Officer Grade 1 (CO1) Brian Mbaraja from his cell together with another inmate Isaiah Dzingai to perform kitchen duties.

The accused was tasked to light fire in the kitchen shed where he then crawled under a security fence which he had tempered with. He put off remand clothes and left them at the security fence and went away.

Dzingai noticed the absence of the accused person and alerted the prison officer. A search was conducted within the remand prison premises but could not locate him.

A report was made at Masvingo Central police. In July he was arrested in Ngundu for other offences and that led to his location.
Edmund Mapope prosecuted the case.
