Armed robbers went away with US$87,000 and R39,000 after a raid on a miner’s home in Esigodini, Matabeleland South, police said on Friday.

Six men armed with machetes used a bolt cutter to cut through burglar bars of a window before forcing entry.

They held the two people inside the house hostage while demanding the combination for opening the safe.

“They tied the two complainants with an electric cable and shoelace before ransacking the house,” police spokesman Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said.

“The complainants were robbed of US$87,000 and R38,800 cash which was in a safe, four Samsung Galaxy tablet phones and a Samsung laptop.”

Nyathi called on business owners “to be security conscious and avoid keeping large sums of money at home.”

Police have appealed for help to identify the robbers.
