A well-known university lecturer is living in constant fear after a string of strange, unexplained fires have repeatedly ravaged his home. These fires have not only destroyed valuable possessions but have also burned his skin, even reducing US$20,000 in cash to ashes, while leaving other items untouched.
Methuseli Moyo, a seasoned journalist and faculty member at the National University of Science and Technology (NUST), describes his life as something out of a horror story. What started as rare incidents six weeks ago has now evolved into a frightening ongoing mystery, leaving him and his family seeking answers.
“I Feel the Fire, But No One Else Sees It”
The fires appear without warning—sometimes in the daylight, other times late at night—but the most unsettling part is that only Moyo experiences the flames.
“I suddenly feel a burning sensation on my skin, but when I call out for help, my family can’t see any fire,” Moyo explained in an interview with The Chronicle. He showed his arms, which were covered in painful, red burns. “They pour water on me, but the blisters only show up later. It’s like something invisible is attacking me.”
So far, the bizarre fires have destroyed several items:
- His entire collection of formal suits, which are vital for his role at the university
- Important legal documents, including property deeds
- Two high-end leather couches, which were reduced to charred frames
Neighbors have reported seeing smoke coming from Moyo’s house, but when firefighters investigate, they find no evidence of any accelerants or electrical malfunctions.
“The Fire Took My Money, But Left the Wardrobe Alone”
The most heartbreaking incident occurred last week. Moyo had just received US$20,000 from the sale of his previous home, money he intended to use for completing his new house. Fearing the mysterious fires, he planned to store the cash in a water-filled bucket for safety. However, before he could do so, disaster struck.
“I left the money in the wardrobe for just 20 minutes,” Moyo recalled, his voice trembling. “When my wife screamed, we rushed in and saw smoke. The money had turned to ash, but the wardrobe was untouched. My clothes? Still fine. It was like the fire only wanted the money.”
Despite efforts from local spiritual healers and prophets to intervene, the attacks have continued. One healer suggested that a “powerful curse” was at play, while a church prophet warned of “an invisible force seeking revenge.”
“Am I Being Punished? I Beg for Forgiveness”
With no clear solution from science or spirituality, Moyo has made a heartfelt public appeal:
“If I’ve wronged anyone, even unknowingly, I beg you to come forward. Let me make it right. My family can’t sleep. We’re scared to leave the house empty, and we’re terrified to stay inside. This isn’t just about money—it’s affecting our mental well-being.”
His wife, who requested to remain anonymous, broke down as she shared their painful experience:
“We’ve become prisoners in our own home. Every day, we wonder what will burn next, and who—or what—is behind this.”
Could Science Offer an Explanation?
The Chronicle consulted Dr. Thabani Ndlovu, a physicist, who admitted that the case was “incredibly unusual.”
“Spontaneous human combustion is a debated phenomenon, but these targeted fires, without affecting the surrounding areas? That goes against what we understand about fire science,” Dr. Ndlovu explained.
Meanwhile, social media has been flooded with theories, ranging from “avenging spirits” to “government energy weapons.” But for Moyo, the only thing that matters is the need for the fires to stop.
“I just want this to end. Whether it’s witchcraft, science, or something else, I don’t care. My family needs peace.”
As the strange fires persist, the question remains: Who—or what—is causing Methuseli Moyo’s suffering?
