As the fury of COVID 19 rages on and with people still locked in their houses, only good music can help ease the hurt and emotion surrounding this dire time.
Afro-Pop artist, Lamont Chitepo has partnered with Killer T to provide a message of hope with a song titled Simba Renyu.
The song which will be released tomorrow, Friday was produced by Mr Kamera and Simba Tags.
In the piece, the artists plead for God’s strength after embarking on a treacherous and painful journey. People are encouraged to look into God and know that everything will be alright.
In an interview, Lamont revealed that he was considering setting a base in Zimbabwe.
“My plans are to base my self in Zim and come to the UK when I want to see my family. I have a role to play with my music and my fans have been missing me greatly. They have become part of my family and it would be nice to be in the same country with my followers. The fact that I away making it difficult to keep my fans fed.”
He talked about how his musical journey and mentioned that African music is largely for Africans and that the biggest market for African artists is ethnics spread all over the world.
“My journey as an African living away from mu niche market has been rather complicated. about 90% of my fans are in Africa. As you know due to the internet age different countries are focusing on their neigh market. I know people say afro beats, afro-pop, afro soul and afro-fusion is now breaking through in London and New York but when you look at the number it is clear that the majority of people who listen to African artists are African. African music has not taken over the world like RNB and Hip Hop did in the ’90s. Because everyone has access to the internet people stick to their local musicians more. For example, the UK Urban scene which consists of grime, drill and UK rap is a proper niche market. People like Wiz Kid and Burna Boy break into those markets when they do collaborations with hot UK Mcs.”
Lamont started his musical journey as Tu Short. He described himself as “an overly confident teenager and young adult.” He would not let people criticise his height so instead of disposing himself he says he decided to celebrate who he was. His name was inspired by an American rapper whom he met called Too Short.
In his words, Lamont said, “I thought he was brave and confident so I named myself after him. Tu short was more about RnB and Hip-hop.”
He decided to rebrand to Lamont Chitepo who is largely an Afro Pop artist although he fuses his music with all genres.
Simba Renyu, is a single being released off an upcoming EP of five songs which will be released shortly.
