Man steals, pawns lover's car

An untrustworthy Zvishavane man stole his girlfriend’s car and pawned it to secure a loan.

Court records indicate that Abel Chitsvare (23) was given the car after he indicated that he wanted to collect his money in town.

The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPA) said the incident happened on 20 January 2024 at around 1400 hours.

“Chitsvare was entrusted by his girlfriend (33) with her vehicle, a grey Honda Fit. Instead of just using the vehicle to go and collect his money in town, the offender drove to Masvingo and borrowed USD 1,000 from a car sale, using the car as collateral.”

Chitsvare’s girlfriend was not aware, and he promised repayment the next day.

His lust for easy cash continued the following da,y and to collect another USD 1,000 from the same car sale.

“On 22 January 2024, around 0900 hours, he borrowed a further USD 1,700 from the same car sale again.

“The owner of the car sale held on to the car pending payment of the debt.

“The car valued at USD 7,500 was eventually recovered when the complainant filed a report with the police.

“The Zvishavane Magistrates Court sentenced the offender to 36 months’ imprisonment for theft of a motor vehicle. 12 months was suspended and the offender will serve 24 months effectively,” said NPA.
